The Struggle of Coming Back
I spend more time than I should on Instagram. Every so often I'll come across a nugget of wisdom that sticks with me. The inspiration for this track was a clip of boxer Mike Tyson describing "the struggle of coming back" and describing it as "beautiful". It reminded me of The Dark Night of the Soul
Only a year or two prior I had gone through my own Dark Night -- ego-death on a level I had never before experienced. I had been exposed for the liar and fake that I was, and thought I'd never experience peace.
Our secrets keep us sick.
Coming out of the Dark Night took over a year, a separation from the mother of my children, and the emotional pain of rejection by a former bandmate. But I know how beautiful the come back can be.
Anyway...
I chopped up the voice sample, slowed it down. Kept everything stripped down. The kick drum reminds me of a heartbeat. The bass synth is gritty and dry.
The dualing guitar leads are "borrowed" from an old Bull Dyke Rodeo song. I thought maybe one day he'll hear this and remember the good times.
